Beyond Paradise, Beyond the Surface

Top 9 Benefits of Social Media for Your Business

This article was published in Women of Egypt Magazine on April 23, 2020

You open your eyes yawning and the first thing you do is reach out for your cellphone on the bedside table.  You surf social media to see what is going on in the world you are about to face in a few moments.  You start with Facebook, or maybe you prefer Instgram and you scroll. What a lovely world!
First post:
You see your favorite actress playing yoga in an enchantingly garden,   her body lean and ideal in a brand outfit that costs a fortune, her hair tied in a long lease ponytail the color of chocolate, smiling to show off her Hollywood teeth.  Unconsciously, you start to pity yourself:   you are still in your bed, tired as hell; the headache you slept with is still persistent; your disheveled hair sticks to your face and the back of your neck due to sweat, worrying about the hundred things you have to do today.
 Second post:
Your friend from high who migrated twenty years is on her vacation in the Caribbean. She is in a sheer vibrantly colored dress and the latest brand sunglasses and shiny lip color, soaking her bare feet in the water while her hair flies away in the air, surrounded by lovely children building huge castles in the sand. Your feeling of lack intensifies.
Third post:
You scroll down and a few posts later, you see your neighbor showing off a wonderful cake she has just baked and commenting “ Made with Love” and you wonder why you cannot bake anything without burning it!  The cake lady has a hundred likes and tens of “wows” and comments begging her to write the recipe.  The disappointment and indignation that started two posts above build up and you wonder, self- disapprovingly why cannot you cook meals that amaze others and make you proud on social media.
Fourth post:
An old colleague looks surprised:  the manager of the company she works for has left a bouquet of daisies and a chocolate box on her desk to thank her for her efforts.  “That’s it!”  You cannot take any more of Facebook and you jump out of bed.   The famous comment of comedian Hala Sidky in one of her movies rings in your ears:   What about the gangs of good for nothing people I work with? Why cannot anyone appreciate my hard work?!   You feel depressed and underappreciated in work.
You decide to switch to Instagram for a quick view only to find your cousin in Canada in a classy restaurant  with a group of good-looking friends savoring a dish of lasagna; she looks thin and the mounts of cheeses that ooze out of the dish seem not to bother her in the least.  You feel an urge to go devour all the cheeses you can get hold of and wish you can have such gorgeous friends to take you out to fancy restaurants in foreign lands.

The “fake” paradise you see on social media makes you feel miserable; the message your subconscious gets out of all the above posts is a message of lack:   in order for you to be happy, you must have all that this actress has:  a large house with a garden, a great body, expensive brand clothes, a private trainer, a daily hairdo and new teeth!  You also need to travel abroad for your next vacation and get overpriced sunglasses; you must find new outgoing friends to take you places and treat you like a queen. You must find another job where are given more credit for your work.  You might also want to change your children and get new ones who look as good as the ones surrounding your friend on the beach.  You lack all these things! In other words, you need to be someone other than yourself to be happy.
Under the colorful surface
What if you look beyond this blissful paradise on social media before you allow your mind to drift away to compare your real life with that of others? Before you are carried away  in a cycle of never ending dissatisfaction and disappointment about your own circumstances try doing this one thing:  imagine the back stage.  I have tried it and it shifted my thinking one hundred eighty degrees and I strongly recommend it to family and friends all the time.
Backstage peek
In all the sights of happy and joyful people in the above posts, you see only the end result; you do not see the moments of pain and hard work that preceded the final look presented on social media.  Your favorite actress surely did not become in great shape in her seventies without having to sweat for hours every day in the gym her whole life; she did not have photos showing her body under the knife of a surgeon or at least having Botox and filler shots all over her face and neck to maintain her younger looks. Nor did she photograph herself while the dentist worked his puzzling painful tools in her mouth.  After all, you should be grateful you are not like her; you are not to be judged by millions only by your looks.
You did not see the backbreaking work that your old colleague did before getting the flowers and chocolate. Maybe she had been working for months, sleep- deprived, drinking tons of coffee to meet deadlines that other colleagues failed to do.   You did not see the backstage of all the stories and you cannot compare yourself to them unless you do. Are you willing to go through hell for a few moments of eye-catching bless on social media?  Are you ready to pay the price of a post that gets likes and wows?
Let’s not be deceived by social media which presents only a segment of a story; let’s see the whole story.  Let’s look beyond Paradise and be thankful and grateful for what we have.

2020: A Fresh Start to Get back on Track

2020:  A Fresh Start to Get back on Track

Has 2019 been a tough year for you?
Have you lost someone dear? A parent or a dear friend?
Have you suffered some setbacks in your career or relationships?
If your answer is a Yes to any of these questions, make sure to finish reading this article to the end.
Rest assured you are not alone; there is not a human being on this planet who goes through life feeling UP 100% of the time. We all get caught up in things we hate and we all lose our way.
Some of us remain lost forever, and some of us find our way back to the path we were destined to travel.  Eckhart Tolle once said: “the primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.  Whether you stay lost, or find that path is a choice. If you beat yourself down or lift yourself up, it is a choice… and that choice starts in your own mind. Your reality is not what has happened, but how you frame what has happened.  Change your thoughts and you will change your life.
Here are 5 ways to get back on track, whenever youve lost your way.
Number 1. Ignite your inner fire; you need no external motivators.
Why MUST you do what you do? Why MUST you succeed? Why must you get healthy, develop yourself, set a positive example? Why MUST you earn more money, change your attitude, mend your relationships? Who are you doing it for? Why must you keep fighting?
There IS always a reason and when you find that reason it will keep your fire kindled. It will get you up early and keep you up late. It will inspire you to push harder, to fight longer, to try a different way… to find a way… To never… ever… give up. Youll still have low moments, but youll never stay there.  Find that reason.
Number 2. Know That Life Is Short
Understanding at a deep level that life is short, and you only get one shot at this human experience can be one of the most powerful ways to get you back on track. Its not a recipe for recklessness or craziness its a knowing that life is short, and everything you are stressing about will likely not matter in the end.
It takes the heaviness off almost every problem. Let it go and focus on doing the things you love: follow your passions, surrounding yourself with great people, be grateful for the life you have inside you, the time you have left and make the most of that time. Ask yourself:  how do I want to be remembered? How can I conduct myself, today and every other day, so I am remembered that way?

Number 3. Feed Your Mind With Something Positive and Powerful
Consume as much positive, transformative and powerful self-development material as possible. Write your own affirmations, read motivational books, listen to good audios, videos, talk to mentors. It doesn’t matter how to motivate yourself – it only matters that you do. If you feed your mind with powerful content every day, and really take it in,  it is very unlikely you will lose your way.
Ask yourself what you would LOVE to improve in your life, with your personal skills or traits… and then seek the best mentors and content on those topics. You can also feed your mind with your own inner content… this is known as GRATITUDE. There is no more powerful force on earth than gratitude  and if you are really feeling it deep, and practicing it every day, it will ensure you remain in a powerful, positive state.
Number 4. Keep moving
Science has proven physical exercise can lower depression, reduce stress and release endorphins or “happy” chemicals from your brain. So, next time you lose your way get to the gym go for a run sweat  release that tension somewhere positive. Do it daily and continue to grow your physical strength. Your physiology and posture also have a lot to do with how you feel. You will feel very different by standing tall, with your shoulders back and a smile on your face, than you will slumped over, shoulders down and frowning. Take note of your posture when you are down. Be conscious of it. Learn all you can about it and make the needed changes.
Number 5. Set your goals
GOALS are important because they clearly define WHERE you want to go, and keep you on track to getting there. Science (and common sense) will tell you those who set specific and clearly defined goals are much more likely to live successful and fulfilled lives than those who dont. Here are a few secrets to goal setting:
Firstly  Be very specific about what you want. Second – Be clear about WHEN you must have it. Finally – DEFINE HOW you will reach that goal.
By getting clear about what you must have and defining how you will get it and by when, you now have a clear purpose to work toward. The chances of you getting off track when you have something IMPORTANT to work towards are very slim. The key is to make it meaningful to you.
Now you know how to get back on track. You know that there are ways to get back on track. You know you dont have to stay lost. You know next time “THIS TOO SHALL PASS. It will pass.  Keep going and keep growing.

Departure Twinge

Departure Twinge

Image result for twinge

For years I have been trying to figure out how it feels when someone dear travels; I do know how bitter it is but somehow I could never find the right words to
describe it
It starts with a little twig, a sharp unseen thorn like the one that penetrates under your fingernail and you can never see it or get it out but you remain aware of it. It stays there right into your heart and you can neither remove it nor ignore its existence. The twig slowly poisons your system and spoils your life but you cannot speak about it or show it to other, so you just keep silent about it and wait.

You go through your daily life as usual, but your coffee never tastes the same, your sleep becomes restless, your daily commute to work feels a lot longer and more tiring though it is exactly the same distance, your headache has an edge to it that you have never felt before. You speak to others, but you gaze somewhere else and your words come out hollow like they belong to some unseen person.  You cook the same meals but they taste neutral like water; they have no salt or sugar or spices. You buy the same flowers but they are void of smell; you hug your cat but you cannot feel the warmth it used to emit. Your whole life has no flavor, meaning, taste or smell and the twinge never goes away.

Happy When Happy Despite

Happy When Happy Despite

On my last birthday I made a massive discovery about myself: I have been postponing happiness for the most part of my life. I was the "happy when" type, the one who needed something to happen as a condition for her happiness.

Over the years, I have deceived myself continuously by promising to be happy when I achieved something or reached a goal;  alas I  could never keep the promise because as soon I realized a goal, I would set another condition for happiness.

I will be Happy when I get married.

I will be happy when I get that job in the university.

I will be happy when I get my PhD.

I will be happy when the kids grow.

I will be happy when they graduate and get married.

I will be happy when I move to the new house.

I will be happy when I lose those five kilos.

I will be happy when I get my dream car.
And I was happy for all these things but only briefly because I had to hurry up and set a new goal and forget about the precious things I already have, take them for granted and assume I should have something else to aspire to.

Now that the realization struck me like a tornado, I tried to remember the last time when I was unconditionally happy, when I did not set a target.  To my surprise, I had to go so far back to the time when I was nine or ten! I saw myself playing on the beach with my sister and brother and some ten or twelve cousins. My parents, uncles and aunts were sitting under three overlapping umbrellas talking and laughing and eating as if there were no worries in their world.

I tried to figure out the reasons  why I lost the "just feel happy for now" ability and decide the exact time I adopted " a happy when" attitude ? Is it something in my personality?   Is it a cultural heritage which allows us to be happy only when our family's pre-decided goals for us are achieved?  Is it an outdated educational system which stressed academic success as a condition for happiness and an end in itself? Or is it an inherent sense of guilt that stressed I  did not deserve happiness unless I do such and such and lashed me to do things fast and perfect?  Instead of coming up with a clear- cut answer, I made another discovery.  Whenever I caught myself feeling happy for one little thing or another, I always felt guilty for it!.  How can I be happy while a relative is sick? Or when my son is stressed because of a final exam?  Or a friend has  just lost her husband? The things to worry about or fret over are always abundant;  deep down I have that notion that as long as they exist I have no right to be happy.  So happiness itself becomes a crime, another reason to torture myself  for not being supportive or helpful or at least appreciative of other’s feelings.  So instead of seizing the opportunity to grab a moment of happiness, my automatic pilot would drag me down to the real world and my mind would shun the happiness urge and start to do its real business: spotting a problem and trying to solve it, quick. I have always found excuses and sat updates and deadlines that I never could meet to postpone happiness.

I also found out it is a cultural issue. In my country if you are with friends or family and a fit of laughter strikes for one reason or another, you will always find a sane person who volunteers to remind you that you have no right to be so happy! They will remind you that this very happy situation would definitely turn into a problem or a sad situation and warn you that your laughter might miraculously lead to tears!!   " Khair Allah homa eg3alo chair"  meaning may God not turn this situation into the opposite.  It is some kind of  supplication we always mention when we catch ourselves lost in laughter or a sudden fit of happiness, as we expect God is likely to punish us for feeling happy.  This, of course, has no religious- related grounds at all since we are always urged , as Moslems, to expect good things and rewards from Allah.

Why cannot we just replace" happy when" with "happy despite" attitudes. To be happy despite the pain, the traffic jams, the loss of a dear one, the failure to get the job. I am not in a position to tell you what to do to be happy. If there is one thing I know by now about happiness then I must tell you it is a  CHOICE .  Happiness is so subjective, relative and brief.  I simply do not  know about you. But I know that I can feel joyful with simple things, as simple as a cup of earl grey or raspberry tea by choosing to drink it mindfully, by a one day trip with my husband, by a bunch of lilies in a vase by my desk, by watching a Disney movie with my kids, or taking my daughter to a shopping mall. Happiness is short and elusive, so go grab one moment and always make the choice to be happy no matter what happens.

Loless Summer

If you are familiar with the blog, then you most probably know Lol,  my son and treasure Ali.  If you are not a frequent visitor here, let me tell you something about him.  Ali is not an ordinary 19th-year-old son; he is the apple of my eyes and the one person I trust with my life and feel totally comfortable depending on.  For his twin Nora and I, a day without Lol is an ugly one, let alone a whole summer without him.

This summer, Ali decided to pursue an adventure in Africa. Despite my feverish attempts to make him change his mind, he won all the arguments.  He packed his bag and his twin Nora and went off to the farthest part of the dark continent, South Africa.  He could have travelled to Europe, like any young man would love to do, but he insisted. He had his mind settled on an educational  volunteer program in Eastern Cape.  For the first ten days or so, they had to stay in a camp where there was no electricity or running water and the weather was freezing. They had to ride daily to the school to get it ready for students. They painted the walls, fixed the roof and built a bicycle parking.  Nora, got bitten by a nasty insect and felt sick all the time, decided to come back. She could not take the harsh living conditions and I hoped Ali would do the same, but he did not.

On his own, it was time for Lol to rise and shine.  He taught math, physics, and English to students who were his age or older. Some of them were thirty and married with children. He made a wonderful impression on the students and staff and on other volunteers and made friends with some of them. He cooked them traditional Egyptian food and helped them bake bread, things he had never done at home.  When he completed the program, he decided to tour the country and visited some of the most spectacular places in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Finlay, Lol is back home. He had the most wonderful summer and I had a terrible summer without him but he made me a very proud mother as he always did. It looks like I will have to spend many Loless summers since he is already planning his next summer trip.

Prayer by Abdalla Mohamed Ali

This is the first guest blog by Engineer Abdalla Mohamed Ali, my wonderful son, and I hope it won't be the last.  I actually sort of "stole" it from a Facebook post of his.  Welcome aboard Bodz.

Prayer
It is a time when you do not have to think about anything, you don't have to plan, stress, worry, regret, or sorrow. You are standing in front of the one and only creator and controller. It is a period of time when you can fantasy or ask for all you desire, or be grateful for all what you have. It is when you can simply step out of all physical or mental status, to reach a state of inner peace that reminds you that you can only control what you can, and the rest is already determined to be the best that could ever happen to you; because it is written by the One who gave you life. This is the  One who gave you the five senses you use to roam a vast and endless, sustainable, artistic, balanced, diverse, and perfectly constructed universe that you had no hand whatsoever in creating! The One who gave you a great tool, your mind,  a tool that enables you to be master of this universe, to survive with your fragile body the challenges of daily life varying from a simple one- celled virus capable of destroying you, to a great grizzly bear able to tear you apart with one strike of it's claws. The One who enabled you to handle all sorts of weather from a vast hot isolated desert, to the subzero temperatures of the north and south. He created you to conquer his universe and be superior to any other living being. Believing in a creator gives you the privilege of praying, rather than meditating. There's a thin line between both behaviors; when you meditate, you clear your head of all unnecessary thoughts, you really relax and enjoy the peace, surrender, and relaxation. In prayer you get the added value of relief; as you realize that you are in the driver's seat of your life, controlling your every move, but you also realize that the seat belt you have on, the life you are driving, and the route you are taking, are all designed by the only perfect engineer out there, the same engineer who provided us with this perfect endless universe to conquer.

Waiting

Image result for pain

I lie down and wait, wait and wait, shifting my weight from one side to the other cautiously lest I should disturb it. Which side hurts more?  I cannot decide.  I make as little noise as possible;  I won't complain;  I won't even think about the pain. Try to befriend it… acknowledge it … it is not foreign to you, accept it as a part of who you are; don't rush it away;  stop hating it;  accept and embrace and befriend the damn thing or it won't go away.  I try to do all these things.   And wait.  I empty my head of all the things I want to do, I give up planning or it will spoil all my plans,  I ignore all the chores that are not done yet, I give up the ideas that stay at the threshold of my mind waiting to be processed, to be sent through the tender set of inflamed wires to my hand to write down, or to my fingers to type. I close my eyes.  I shut off life and wait, wait for the pain to go away.
